Description:

The years 1920-1930 are times associated in the popular imagination with a contagious joy in a Western Europe that aimed to leave behind the sadness and difficulties of the First World War. However, these two decades also represent the rise of reactionary ideas that oppose the established political order (liberalism) that is accused of being ineffective and even guilty of both the evils of war and the great economic crisis of 1929.
In Portugal, Spain and France, various publications of a different nature were created and lived their moment of glory in this period. An important point in common between the nationalist publications in the mentioned countries is the defence of / nostalgia for a strong and now defunct monarchy.
Most of the historical studies focus on the analysis of the proximity of these reactionary currents to fascism / National Socialism while others tend to explore the intrinsic peculiarities of each nationalist project. Our goal with this study is totally different.
The purpose of this work is to compare Portuguese, French and Spanish reactionary discourses from a transnational perspective in order to observe both the characteristics of the case which they chose to make in spreading their ideas and their common points and divergences. In this way, we will not only get to know better the channels and ties between French and Iberian nationalisms, but we will also be able to verify if there really is the same European model when it comes to opposing liberalism and modern society from the conservative / traditionalist wing. In addition, our work will allow us to delve into the effect that participation in these journals could have on the careers of authors in the medium and long term.
